Every year in America, we are witnessing nearly 655,00 deaths due to heart disease. Were you aware that of those deaths, over 32,000 of them occur in Pennsylvania alone? In 2017, Pennsylvania was ranked in 14th place for the state with the most heart disease-related deaths. With heart disease being the leading cause of death for people in the United States, something must be done.

In 1924, a group of passionate physicians and social workers set out to do just that by creating the American Heart Association in Chicago in order to focus their research on combatting America’s #1 killer. Now, they have chapters across the nation, including the American Heart Association of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Before the AHA was founded, people struggling with heart disease were considered to be destined for death. But, this wonderful organization has made it their mission to raise awareness on this disease so that our community can make healthier choices that are accessible. The AHA of Harrisburg, specifically, has implemented several initiatives that make a healthier lifestyle available wherever you live, work, and play.
